PADSTOW OBBY OSS
Festivals
Date added: 02/03/2010

Prepare yourself for a strange tradition that's said to aid fertility! Padstow (Cornwall UK) town centre's 'Obby 'Oss Celebrations see two black-clothed hobby horses make a bee-line for every woman they pass, drawing them under their cloaks and daubing them with coal. The hobby horses have big red eyes and snapping teeth, and to be caught under their cloaks is thought to be good luck and even fertility-inducing! Such bizarre goings-on were first recorded in the 16th century and take place every May Day as a fertility ritual, held to mark the coming of summer.
MINEHEAD\'S MAYDAY MAYHEM

Minehead's May Day Mayhem celebrations reflect pagan traditions, as a hobby horse rampages through town. The festivities start on "warning night" and on May Day itself the horse battles the "town horse" before making its way to nearby Dunster Castle. The celebrations are repeated on the following days. Each day the horse party is up early and ends the day in a tavern drinking; the last evening is said to be particularly rowdy, so steer clear if you don't want to be caught up in the fun.
